HKV: Veena-Venu-Violin

Location: Chamrajpet
Date: Apr 16th 2010

Violin: H. K. Venkataraman
Flute: G. Ravikiran
Veena: Ashwin Anand
Mridangam: Neyvelli Narayanan
Ghatam: Giridhar Udupa
Kanjira: N. Amrith

Excellent concert by my teacher (on the violin). Unfortunately the beginning and end have been cut a little, because I started the recording late and the battery ran out during the last lap of the concert. Download the file here (MP3, 104.99 MB).

I played the song Brova Barama (Bahudari raga) for the VTU Fest 2010, and used this recording as the guideline for my practice.

Mandolin Srinivas: Jagadodharana

Location: Chamrajpet
Date: Apr 29th 2010

One of the best renditions of this song I have ever heard. This song also holds special significance to me because this was recorded during the first live concert of Mandolin Srinivas that I attended.

There's another wonderful experience I have related to this song. As Srinivas was ending his RTP in Kalyani, I borrowed a pen from the person sitting next to me and proceeded to write down 'Jagadodharana - Kapi'. Unfortunately, the person saw what I was writing and said something to the effect of "Don't bother giving this chit, he won't play Krishna songs during Rama Navami". Due to this, I didn't give the chit but folded it and kept it into my pocket. I was quite disappointed because this is one of my favourite songs/ragas and I wanted to hear it live from my idol..

As I was thus pondering my bad luck, I heard Srinivas play a short alapana that sounded like Kapi (but I was not sure because he only played a few notes). My heart began to beat faster and I was just praying that he would play at least a song in Kapi raga next. Hardly had the thought run across my mind when the familiar first line of Jagadodharana greeted my ears. I was ecstatic that such a coincidence had occured and thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

Udayalur Kalyanaraman: New Year's 2009

Location: Mylapore
Date: Dec 31st 2008

A very good (both in terms of audio clarity and the music itself) recording of one of the best Bhagavathars out there today, Udayalur Kalyanaraman. Accompaniments are wonderful, though the violin is a little off pitch at times. Babu Rajashekar on the Mridangam is superb as always.

This was a New Year recording which seems to have started at 9 pm on Dec 31st 2008 and gone on till around 12:15 on 1st Jan 2009. The recording is around 3 hours long and he covers various aspects in his usual jovial and interesting style. Definitely worth a hear.

Due to the long duration and large filesize of this recording, it may not be convenient to hear it as a stream (as provided above). You can download the file here (MP3, 163.73 MB).
